Grant Recipients 2009

Drug & Alcohol Consortium of Allen County

Local Drug Free Communities Fund, 2009 Grant Requests

As a result of the work of our Funding Committee, our Finance Committee and our Board of Directors,
we request the following programs to be funded:

 

Prevention $75,620.30

Eagle’s Nest Youth Center, Inc. – Repeated funding for the evidence-based program “The Only Drug I Need Is Me,” which will help high risk youth ages 8 to 18 to build internal and external assets, gain knowledge about the risk of alcohol and other drugs and demonstrate those skills by developing healthy attitudes and free time habits ($6,000.00).

East Allen Family Resource Center, Inc. – Funding for “Straight for Life” program utilizing the PATHS curriculum for children K-6 and Project Alert for youth in 7th and 8th grades. The youth center will also incorporate Parent Connection, skill building sessions for parents as part of the Straight for Life program ($5,000.00).

Fort Wayne Community Fishing Club – Funding for evidence-based “Life Skills” prevention training and leadership academy which will serve 8th-10th grade youth of all racial backgrounds. The youth will develop positive mentoring relationships with caring and responsible adults who will work with the students to live their lives free of alcohol, substance abuse, and gang activity ($9,525.00).

Fort Wayne Urban League – Funding for “Standards-Based Academic Assistance” project, which will include evidence-based drug prevention curriculum and which will also equip and encourage parents to assist their children in achieving personal and academic success ($5,000.00).

Indiana State Policy Alliance Foundation – Funding for a power point projector to be used for the purpose of educating students in the Allen County area on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. This projector will be used for presentations in area schools and after school programs. It will also be available for personnel to use in the performance of the Department’s goals ($534.99).

Leadership Fort Wayne – Repeated funding for Youth As Resources philanthropic development program encouraging youth to conduct re-granting programs for youth driven anti-drug and alcohol efforts ($5,475.31).

Lifeline Youth and Family Services – Repeated funding for “Project Incentive,” a program which provides year-round education and drug-free activities for preschool children in one of Fort Wayne’s most high-risk communities. This program incorporates science-based drug prevention curriculum, “Al’s Pals,” into weekly lessons and activities along with tools for early-school success to reach children at the earliest point possible with a positive drug-free message ($5,000).

The Power House Youth Center – Repeated funding for their “Fighting Back and Standing Firm” initiative which utilizes projects, activities, partnerships, and the “Project Alert” prevention curriculum to fight the negative influences and pressures of drugs and alcohol in the New Haven community ($10,000.00).

Southeast Youth Council – Repeated funding for the evidence based Cornerstone Youth Center Prevention Programming and the Cornerstone Coffee House anti-drug program in the Monroeville/Heritage High School area. This is an active outreach program in a rural community ($13,000.00).

United Hispanic Americans – Repeated funding for evidence based “Diga No” (Say No) to ATOD outreach to Hispanic youth ($7,000.00).

Prevention Committee Allocation – Funding for Prevention Committee projects, including a lending library of teaching facilitation guides, activity packets for youth groups, and audio visual programs to be utilized for the work that the committee as a whole plans and conducts for city and county-wide collaborative prevention activities and events ($4,085.00).

Prevention Training – Funding to provide DAC and community members with training expense support for relevant drug and alcohol topics throughout the year on an individual request basis ($5,000.00).

 

Justice $75,620.30

Allen County Sheriff’s Department – Funding for the purchase of six in-car video replacement cameras which are essential tools to increase the OWI arrest and conviction rates ($35,360.00).

Fort Wayne Police Department – Repeated funding for Portable Breath Test equipment for their Impaired Driver Apprehension project. These units are an essential tool for OWI arrests and demonstration of probable cause ($16,810.00).

Indiana State Police Alliance Foundation Funding for purchase of a K-9 (canine) officer to be used for narcotics, explosives and weapon detection, the search and apprehension of criminals, locating lost children, lost elderly, and building searches. The K-9 are also used in demonstrations and education for the community about the negative effects of drugs, finding lost items and evidence, crowd control and protection   ($5,200.00).

New Haven Police Department - Funding for three digital in-car DVD units, DVDs, and software ($18,250.00).

 

Intervention/Treatment $75,620.30

Allen County Jail Chaplaincy – Repeated funding to provide intervention to jail inmates to reduce substance abuse by sessions with a certified counselor focusing on the human body’s reaction to substance abuse, resources that are available in the community to help them and techniques to recognize the triggers that lead to relapse ($5,000.00).

Intervention Committee Scholarships – Repeated funding for a centralized treatment support program that has become a model throughout the state, providing financial support for treatment agencies providing services to working class clients who do not have treatment coverage.  Multiple agencies receive funds on a monthly basis ($70,620.30).

 

Coalition Support $75,620.30

DAC – Funding supports central coalition coordination for more than 150 organizations, compliance with state Drug-Free Indiana requirements, the acquisition and management of multiple state and federal grants through coordinated cross-sector dialogue, planning, and program execution, bringing an additional $290,000 per year to this county to reduce the negative impact of drug and alcohol on our citizens. Additionally, we coordinate individual training scholarships for those who work in the field ($75,620.30).
